The 2018 Irish Open Swimming Championships took place from
Wednesday 4th April to Sunday 8th April and saw Ireland's top
swimmers in action, hoping to qualify this summer’s European Senior and Junior
Championships and World Youth Olympic Games Teams. The event hosted 350 swimmers from 62 clubs, including a strong team of 50 from the USA
National Club Swimming Association, competing across five days of
competition for national titles in 34 individual and 7 relay events. Four of our New Ross Swimmers secured
entry times for this prestigous competition; First time qualifier Min Allen ,
competed during the first two days in the 100 breast and 800 free, ending her participation with two solid swims. Also a first time
qualification for Sadhbh Bailey. She took to the pool for 100, 200, 400 and 800 free. Reaching
junior B finals in all of her events. Great swimming from Sadhbh. Cian Foley joined the group on
Saturday, ending his day with a solid swim in the 1500 free. While Denis
Kilbride secured times over all 5 days of competion,200, 400, 800 and 1500 free as well as 400 IM. Denis also made finals / top 10 finishes in
all of his events and most deservedly, won his first bronze medal in an 'Open' in the 1500
free. A superb result for the young Rower man. This
was the first time the finals were life streamed on youtube and
poignantly, our own New Ross Olympian Grainne Murphy provided commentary
over the duration of the competition. Indeed fellow New Ross Olympian
Adrain (Zorro) O'Connor also attended some of the events providing
support to the team
Well done to all four and to coach Fran Ronan.
